Shared Vision – A Journey Beyond Sight

Shared Vision – A Journey Beyond Sight

    Keith Partridge (2019)

Red Szell suffers from the degenerative eye condition retinitis pigmentosa and is now blind. But he’s always had an adventurous streak and in this inspirational journey, we see Red travel to the very NW corner of Scotland. As the first blind climber to reach the top of the iconic sea stacks of the Old Man Of Hoy and Old Man Of Stoer only Am Buachaille remains in the trilogy of these blades of rock that jut from the crashing Atlantic. Just reaching the base will involve a triathlon of sorts, with a mountain bike ride, a steep scramble down the mainland cliff before a swim across the tidal flow to reach the start of the climb. He then has four hours to get up and get off before the tide races in. Red’s story is a journey beyond sight.

    Out on A Limb

    Jordan Manley (2019)

In this film, two people and two worlds meet. Craig DeMartino, an adaptive climber from Boulder (Colorado) and Kai Lin, an industrial engineer from Brooklyn (New York), team up to design a game-changing prosthetic foot. This is easier said than done. Early prototypes don't hold up to the rigors of straight-in crack climbing, but this unlikely alliance is determined to test the power of problem-solving, so Craig and Lin keep at it. First episode of 'The problem solvers' series, by Arc'Teryx.

Footless Mountain Climber - Hugh Herr

    Dave Caldwell (1984)

This Real People reportage filmed by Bob Carmichael, portrays a young Hugh Herr, only eighteen months after being rescued on Mount Washington, where after being caught in a blizzard and having passed three nights under extreme cold, suffered severe frostbite and lost his legs below the knees. With the help of leg prostheses, Herr is now back on the rock and climbs an easy route on Chickies Rock with the show host, Sarah Purcell, and a more difficult route on Shawangunk Ridge. Real People was a television series in which different hosts in front of a large studio audience were presenting reportages of varied 'real people' (as opposed to celebrities) with unique occupations or hobbies.

Ascent - The Story of Hugh Herr

    Jonathan Grupper (2002)

A documentary that follows the story of rock climber turned MIT prostheticist, Hugh Herr. The film joins Hugh on a very personal quest, as he is himself a double amputee. At age 17 while fast becoming a world-class rock climber, Hugh was caught in a terrible blizzard on Mount Washington. He barely survived, only to lose his legs and, worse, to suffer the loss of one of his rescuers' lives. Undaunted, Hugh took to creating artificial limbs that would enable him not only to continue climbing but to climb at a more advanced level than he could with biological legs. This instinct for innovation soon became an adult passion for helping others through high tech prosthetics.

    Adaptive

    Taylor Zann (2019)

Jim Ewing is a veteran rock climber and senior rope engineer at Sterling Rope, a prominent rock-climbing rope company. On Christmas Day in 2014, Jim fell over 50 feet to the ground in a climbing accident, a near-death experience that led to the subsequent below-the-knee amputation of his left leg. Before walking on a prosthetic, Jim was already climbing again, and before long, he began dreaming about his bucket list… In 2018, Jim joins Maureen Beck, a professional climber missing her left hand, to attempt the first all-adaptive ascent of the Lotus Flower Tower in Canada’s Cirque of the Unclimbables. Jim and Maureen hope to demonstrate that 'disabled' climbers are just differently –and equally–abled.
