Giovanni Testa lives with his wife Teresa and their two children in a village on the shores of Lake Garda. He has a shipyard where he builds boats, but he goes through economic problems, so he goes to his brother Enzo, who is rich, to ask for a loan. Enzo is murdered and Giovanni is accused since Enzo had denied him the loan. Giovanni flees to the mountains and adopts a false identity.
