In 1995 he embarks on his third attempt to K2 by the southeast Ridge Abruzzi Spur, joining a US expedition along with Alison Hargreaves, who died during the descent. Ten years later, in 2005, Hinkes became the first British mountaineer to summit all the 14 eight-thousanders.
