    Le Dhaulagiri, montagne des vents

    Philippe Lallet (1985)

On October 4, 1984, two mountaineers from Grenoble, Pierre Beghin and Jean-Noël Roche, climb the south-west pillar of Dhaulagiri in alpine style and without supplemental oxygen. The route, opened by a wide and 'heavy' Japanese expedition in 1978, follows the western ridge and presents 3000m of vertical ascent in mixed terrain. Beghin and Roche complete the second ascent and the first one in alpine style. There, on the mountain of the winds, Jean-Noël Roche performs a paragliding flight from an altitude of more than 5000 meters.

    Sagarmatha 88

    Hervé Nicolas (1988)

Everest Ascent and Tragedy. A French expedition of Chamonix guides was led by Serge Koenig and composed of Denis Ducroz, Hervé Thivièrge, Alain Payot, Jean-Paul Chassagne, Marc Galy, Daniel Audibert and Jean-Paul Balmat. They had hoped to broadcast for television from the summit. On October 12, Koenig and Lhakpa Sherpa left the South Col and arrived on top at 1:30 P.M. Their television camera failed and so they left it on the summit for a second try later. On the descent they met Galy and Lhakpa’s brother Pasang Temba. Some time later, Galy descended to the South Col, figuring it too risky to continue.

    Le skieur du vide

    Le skieur du vide

    Alain Tixier (1990)

Pierre Tardivel has been one of the best extreme skiers since the 1990s. A great specialist in impossible descents, he tried the north face of Les Courtes, a 900 m wall with a 65° slope. Turning after turning, Pierre controls his speed, contracts, observes and locates the place where he will pass. Risks of avalanches, falls, the feat is not without risk. Extreme skiing has evolved considerably since its inception: material, style... This archival document pays tribute to the one who has made this sport evolve in the most significant way possible: to achieve impossible feats.
