These questions are the basis for this two hour documentary. This is the first film which takes a unique and comprehensive approach to this extensive subject. There is no commentary necessary, as the protagonists giving their account of the cultural history are experts in their field and quite charismatic personalities. This documentary film is not only conveyed through the lavish pictures or alpinistic enthusiasm, but through the individuals narrating each chapter.

This adventure program shows the attempts to place the first American woman on the top of Mt. Everest and to hang glide off the upper slopes of the mountain. The Tibetan culture is also explored in the program as the expedition travels from the Tibetan capital of Lhasa to Mt. Everest.

The first episode of the 2 part series 'Everest: Mountain of dreams, mountain of doom', includes the incredible stories of the early climbers, including George Leigh Mallory and Sir Edmund Hillary's legendary summit climb, and much more.  From George Mallory to the 1996 tragedy, the series explores the major personalities and expeditions covering an 80-year span. The second episode, titled 'Tempting Fate', explores the triumphant (and tragic) expeditions of the modern era and takes an in-depth view of the terrible events of 1996, the deadliest year in the history of Mount Everest.

In May 1996 Everest claimed the lives of 11 climbers. Some of these men and women were amateurs. They believed that any reasonably fit person could make it to the top of the world. They were adrenaline junkies but had to face tragic consequences when the forces of nature hit back. In May 1996, three groups departed Camp Four simultaneously, en route to the 29,028-foot summit. Over the next 48 hours, they faced hurricane-force winds, exposure, oxygen deprivation, freezing conditions, psychological pain and, ultimately, death. The film includes archive footage and testimony from expert mountaineers like Chris Bonington and Ed Viesturs, and from some of the disaster's survivors.
