Douglas Tompkins - A wild legacy

    Chris Cresci (2016)

Douglas Tompkins was a world-renowned adventurer, entrepreneur, and conservationist. The founder of The North Face and cofounder of Esprit, Doug spent the first half of his life building successful, global brands, while simultaneously adventuring around the world, completing first descents of the world’s toughest rivers. In 1968 Doug embarked on a trip to Chile, driving with friends from California to the tip of Patagonia. Documented in the film Mountain of Storms, the trip solidified Doug’s place as a rock climbing legend. In the early 1990s, Doug sold his part of Esprit and turned his entrepreneurial energies to land and wildlife conservation projects in South America, working alongside his wife, Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, the former CEO of Patagonia, Inc.

    Fitz Roy

    Lito Tejada-Flores (1969)

The film documents the first ascent of the south-west butress of Fitz Roy in the Patagonian Andes, by Yvon Chouinard, Dick Dorworth, Chris Jones, Doug Tompkins, and Lito Tejada-Flores. The shots, all done in place without subsequent ''reconstructions'' make the climate and the feelings experienced by the protagonists, who made the third successful ascent to Fitz Roy. Their story is also told in the documentary 'Mountain of storms' that narrates the whole trip the team did from California to Patagonia crossing all South America in an old van.

    Robert Collinson (1972)

In the summer of 1968 four men –climber and surfer Yvon Chouinard, climber and skier Doug Tompkins, champion skier Dick Dorworth and climber and cinematographer Lito Tejada-Flores– set off from California in an old van to surf, ski and climb their way down to the southern end of Argentina. Three and a half months and 16,500 miles later, they arrive at their destination: Patagonia, where they met up with a young British climber, Chris Jones. Their goal is to climb a mountain that had been climbed only twice before: Cerro Fitz Roy. The team attempts the first ascent of Fitz Roy's Southwest Buttress, the so-called 'Californian Route'.
