    Die grosse Zinne

    Reinhold Messner (2019)

Throughout the history of mountaineering, the imposing Cima Grande in the Italian Dolomites has been both a playground and favorite destination for the best rock climbers in the world. In his film celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first ascent, Reinhold Messner shows the major milestones on the peak with the help of reenacted climbing scenes using only materials and historic equipment of the respective era. The film’s storyline is based on five success stories of great alpinists, all of whom not only stand for the development of sport climbing, but for the pioneering spirit of their time.

    The games climbers play...

    The games climbers play...

    Richard Else (1992)

Fifht episode of 'The climbers', a six-part series on the history of mountaineering by Chris Bonington and Richard Else produced by the BBC. This episode contrasts the traditions of climbers in Britain and on the continent of Europe, the former developing a technique of free climbing and the latter employing aids such as spanners, bolts and drills to climb routes that would otherwise be inaccessible. The program includes old footage of the 1946 film by Alain Pol 'L'appel des cimes' and of a young Joe Brown climbing in Snowdonia in 1957 in a program of the BBC 'Eye to eye' series.

    Scuola di roccia

    Scuola di roccia

    (1938)

An exceptional cinematographic document on Emilio Comici, shot in 1938 in Val Rosandra by a MGM operator. The documentary shows Comici with the mountain guide Gianni Macor, in all the stages of the rock climbing technique, in the way of an instructional film. Comici, nicknamed the 'Angel of the Dolomites', is considered as the most extraordinary climber of the period between the two World Wars. He made over 200 first ascents in the Dolomites during his short career. Comici perfected the Bavarian technique of mountain climbing, and began the era of 'sixth grade' climbing. It was Comici who originated the concept of climbing direttissima routes, following the path a drop of water would take down the mountain.
