    K2 - La montagne inachevée

    K2 - La montagne inachevée

    Jacques Ertaud (1980)

Climbing K2 by its difficult and unconquered south-west ridge is the goal that Bernard Mellet set after two years of careful preparation. To overcome this ambitious achievement he has selected fourteen of the best french climbers of the moment. The team reached a height of 8400 meters, 200 meters below the summit. The route, called the 'magic line' was first climbed seven years later, in 1986, by a Polish team. The route was not successfully repeated until 2004, when Jordi Corominas, from a Catalan team, completed it.

    Victoire sur l'Annapurna DVD

    Victoire sur l'Annapurna

    Marcel Ichac (1953)

Record of the French Himalayan Expedition that climbed the first 8000 ever ascended: Annapurna in 1950. The expedition, led by Maurice Herzog, was composed of some of the finest mountaineers at the time (Louis Lachenal, Gaston Rébuffat, and Lionel Terray). Lachenal and Herzog reached the summit without the use of supplementary oxygen. The film is an epic adventure filmed in difficult conditions. It also shows the dramatic way back under the monsoon with Herzog and Lachenal unable to walk because of severe frostbite in hands and feets. The documentary was released in France 1953 only 8 weeks before Tenzing and Hillary conquered Mount Everest.

    A l'assaut de l'himalaya

    Jean-Jacques Languepin (1951)

In 1951, the 3rd French expedition to the Himalayas sets out to conquer the Nanda Devi (7,800m). The attempt to traverse the ridge between the main summit and Nanda Devi East resulted in the death of two members of the expedition. Team leader Roger Duplat and Gilbert Vignes disappeared on the ridge somewhere below the main summit. Tenzing Norgay was in a support team on this expedition; he and Louis Dubost climbed Nanda Devi East to look for the missing pair. Some years later Tenzing was asked what was the most difficult climb he ever did, expecting him to say Mount Everest; he surprised his interlocutors by saying Nanda Devi East. Filmed in Gevacolor.
