    Die Eiger-Nordwand Tragödie 1936

    Die Eiger-Nordwand Tragödie 1936

    Gerhard Baur (1981)

In 1936, in the Alps, only the Eiger North Wall still had to be climbed. Standing 1800 metres high, it was certainly the highest but also the most dangerous and difficult of the big inviolate walls. In 1935, two Bavarian alpinists from Munich lost their lives trying to reach the top. In 1936, two German soldiers, Toni Kurz and Andreas Interstoisser, made an attempt despite their commander's order not to do so. The attempt turned into a tragedy in which, not only the two Germans lost their lives, but also two Austrian companions who had joined them by chance.
