    Hitlers Gipfelstürmer

    Hitlers Gipfelstürmer

    Tom Matzek (2009)

Mountain climbers, jungle explorers and desert foxes - many of them ended up in the claws of the Nazi Party, the SS or the Wehrmacht because of their careers, scientific curiosity or their love of travel. Were these adventurers aware of the consequences of this association or were they simply interested in pursuing their own interests regardless of the price? That's the question that this documentary seeks to answer for the search for pre-historic sites in the Sahara led to the development of maps for the Wehrmacht, while an airborne expedition in the Amazon helped to develop aerial photographic analysis. The stories of explorers like Heinrich Harrer and Laszlo Almasy, better known as the «English Patient», are retold using spectacular pictures and footage from places like India, Egypt and Peru.

    Climb up to hell

    Climb up to hell

    Christopher Brasher (1968)

Documentary about the North Face of the Eiger, and the men who have climbed, or tried to climb it. The story of men against the Eiger told by Christopher Brasher. Thirty-three young men have died on the North Face of the Eiger-the most dangerous mountain wall in the Alps. Yet still, men venture into this cold, white, vertical hell: a place which has been the stage for human drama, for heroism, for cowardice, for ultimate endurance -even for alleged murder. This programme tells the story of the men who have found, in this 6,000-foot-high face, the ultimate challenge to their skill and courage.

    Eiger solo Vod

    Eiger solo

    Leo Dickinson (1983)

Welsh mountaineer Eric Jones' ultimate dream is to climb the notorious North Face of the Eiger alone. Filming Eric Jones on his solo climb was a great challenge to cameraman Leo Dickinson, who had to be lowered from a helicopter to Death Bivouac, high on the mountain to capture Eric's progress on film. Leo Dickinson's film showed the scale of the achievement by seeing Eric Jones in his tiny perspective, a mere speck, against the magnitude of the mountain. The film also traces the history of the North Face including the early pre-war attempts that gave the mountain its notorious reputation. The climax of the film recreates John Harlin's 5000ft fall during the historic winter ascent of the Eiger Direct in 1966.
