The legendary 'Separate Reality', in Yosemite Valley, is one of the cult routes for free climbers. To date it has certainly been one of the most famous and difficult free-climbing routes in the world. Heinz Zak was there as photographer when, in 1986, Wofgang Güllich astonished the world with the first and until then only free climb of this route, with no safety rope. Since then Zak has been developing the idea of repeating this extraordinary ascent himself. He reproduced a model of the American routes in his garage and has trained his body and mind for a long time. 23rd May 2005 was the big day: doubts and fears accompanied all the preparation, but as soon as he started climbing Zak achieved the necessary concentration and spiritual balance to perform this extraordinary enterprise, repeating the solo free climb of 'Separate reality', just 19 years after Güllich’s first ascent.Climbing locations
