Land of mist and fire DVD

    Land of mist and fire

    Leo Dickinson (1978)

The Patagonian ice cap, situated on the southern tip of South America, must be one of the world's least explored places. This is quite understandable because it consists of twenty-four square kilometers of crevassed ice swept by wind and snowstorms. Welshman Eric Jones, Mick Coffey, and cameraman Leo Dickinson trekked across this remote, dangerous land to climb Cerro Lautaro, a volcano in the middle of the ice field. Despite being held up by bad weather for two weeks, Jones, Coffey, and Dickinson eventually scaled the previously unclimbed Cerro Lautaro and another peak they named Cerro Mimosa.

    Filming the impossible

    Filming the impossible

    Leo Dickinson (1981)

The risky expeditions and events filmed by Leo Dickinson are challenging and death defying in themselves, but filming these events can prove to be just as challenging and dangerous. This documentary answers the often asked question, 'how did they get those shots?' providing a foreshortening of the techniques used and the dangers run by Dickinson while he filmed his adventures and explorations. Among others, the film features Eric Jones' solo ascent to the Eiger, the ascent of the Matterhorn north face in winter by Eric Jones, Brian Molyneux and Eddie Birch, and the first ascent of Everest without supplemental oxygen, by Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler in 1978.

    The Cerro Torre enigma

    The Cerro Torre enigma

    Leo Dickinson (1978)

In 1959 Italian climber Cesare Maestri claimed to have scaled the Patagonian peak of Cerro Torre with Austrian Toni Egger. The claim has been disputed in some quarters ever since. Skepticism toward Maestri's 1959 account mounted as it became evident how difficult the alleged route is even with the advances in technique made through the first decade of the next century. In the documentary, Maestri defends his version of the story and comments on the 1970 attempts by the compressor route. Jim Donini speaks about the clues he found on the 1959 route while climbing Torre Egger in 1976. The film also follows the successful ascent made in 1974 by the 'Ragni di Lecco' climbers.

    Matterhorn DVD

    Matterhorn

    Leo Dickinson (1975)

The first filmed winter ascent of the Matterhorn North Face. To set the scene, the tragic history of Edward Whymper's first ascent is expertly re-enacted. The modern expedition, a team of three Britihs climbers, is also plagued by epics: Eric Jones is hit by an avalanche and only manages to stop perilously near the edge of a 1000 ft drop. Then the worst storm ever recorded in Zermatt strikes the Matterhorn. With time and weather against them, the team is forced to climb in the dark while thunderstorms rumble around them. This adventure captures the skill and courage of the climbers, their agony and tension, and the beauty of the assault on this spectacular mountain.

    Eiger solo Vod

    Eiger solo

    Leo Dickinson (1983)

Welsh mountaineer Eric Jones' ultimate dream is to climb the notorious North Face of the Eiger alone. Filming Eric Jones on his solo climb was a great challenge to cameraman Leo Dickinson, who had to be lowered from a helicopter to Death Bivouac, high on the mountain to capture Eric's progress on film. Leo Dickinson's film showed the scale of the achievement by seeing Eric Jones in his tiny perspective, a mere speck, against the magnitude of the mountain. The film also traces the history of the North Face including the early pre-war attempts that gave the mountain its notorious reputation. The climax of the film recreates John Harlin's 5000ft fall during the historic winter ascent of the Eiger Direct in 1966.

    Everest unmasked Vod

    Everest unmasked

    Leo Dickinson (1978)

Record of the first ascent of Everest made without the use of oxygen equipment, made in May 1978 by Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler. Could it be done? Would their blood vessels burst? Would they suffer brain damage leading to madness? Nobody was sure. Messner: 'I would never come here for trying Everest with oxygen. That is not a challenge for me.' A fascinating piece of history, well filmed by Leo Dickinson and Eric Jones (above the South Col Messner used a cine camera to continue the filming), featuring Messner and Habeler's thoughts. The film follows the usual sequence from Namche to Base Camp, through the Icefall, to Camps I, II and III. It also shows historical footage of the pioneering Mallory and Shipton expeditions.
