Filmed as a documentary, the film had the collaboration and participation of mountaineers from the high Tatras mountain club. Directed by Jerzy Surdel, this is the first film of the Trypyk Górski trilogy. The second film of the series, Odwrot, was originally presented at the Trento festival in 1969, where it won the best short film award; 37 years later, it was also awarded at the Banff festival.

    A film crew participates in a mountain rescue on the wall of Kazalnica in the High Tatras, carried out by the GOPR (Tatra Mountain Rescue Group) in February 1972. During the filming, one of the rescuers, Franciszek Spytka, was buried by an avalanche. Fortunately, he could be rescued. Directed by Jerzy Surdel, this is the third film of the Trypyk Górski trilogy. The second film of the series, Odwrot, was originally presented at the Trento festival in 1969, where it won the best short film award; 37 years later, it was also awarded at the Banff festival.

    Norman Dyhrenfurth leads an expedition with thirty climbers from thirteen different countries including Don Whillans, Dougal Haston, Naomi Uemura, Pierre Mazeaud, and others. This optimistic expedition hopes to simultaneously climb the SW Face and the West Ridge Direct, but is fraught with one-upmanship, personality conflicts, and organizational problems. Harsh Bahuguna is caught out in a storm at Camp 3 and died despite the efforts of the rescue party. The expedition falters after his death, but Whillans and Haston push the SW Face route up to 27,400 feet (8,350 meters) before lack of equipment forces an end to the expedition.

Four of the seven men led by the Englishman Edward Whymper lost their lives in the attempt, and the story of Zermatt and the tragedy on the Matterhorn was soon on everyone’s lips. The rope connecting Edward Whymper and local guides Peter Taugwalder and his son to the rest of the unfortunate rope group, broke during the descent.

A long-forgotten Polish film made in 1967 that was rescued from obscurity by American Alex Bertulis, who found a copy and restored the film. The film was originally presented at the Trento festival, where it won the best short film award in 1969.
