Marcello Baldi

A portrait of Marcello Baldi, the director of Trentino origin who in 1954 produced and directed the film on the first ascent to K2 by the expedition of the Italian Alpine Club led by Ardito Desio, which took Compagnoni and Lacedelli to the summit. In this film Marcello Baldi tells his story, with a long interview with Pupille di Calamento where Baldi spent his childhood and where he returns every year. It is not only the background linked to the production and distribution of the film Italia K2 that returns to the memories of this mountaineer, but also his long artistic life.

The documentary describes Leo Gasperl's summer ski school on the Matterhorn's Plateau Rosa, in Italy. First, a group of novice skiers learn the basic techniques of alpine skiing. Then, Jean Pélissier makes a rock climbing demonstration on a rock face. Finally, the group of skiers make an alpine ascent carrying the skis to end up descending skiing back to the Plateau. Compared to similar works made by other expeditions of the time, Italy K2 presents the novelty of showing the shots taken just from the summit. These shots were made by the same Compagnoni and Lacedelli. The film does not delve into the events that led to the death of Mario Puchoz, and does not mention what happened with Walter Bonatti the day before the conquest of the summit.
