Little is known that he was one of the pioneers of mountain films and that his life was closely interwoven with the political ups and downs in his home region of South Tyrol.

The ascent of the Winkler Tower in the legendary Rosengarten area, in a film by the legendary filmmaker Luis Trenker. Three young friends make a trip to the Dolomites. After their arrival with the Val Gardena Railway, the group beat their tent at the foot of the Rosengarten Group. The next day, they enjoy the beauty of the mountains in a different way: while the young woman (Marianne Hold) splashes in the lake, the two men climb roped to the top of the Winkler Tower.

Mario Claris is the successful co-owner of an engineering firm in Zurich. That makes it even harder for the reliable man to hear, that a bridge designed by him collapsed and took 43 men to their deaths. Mario’s feeling of guilt is so strong, that he decides to commit suicide in the mountains. A shepherd thwarts his plans, however. And through the love of Angela, the daughter of a country doctor caring for him, he finds his way back to life.

Giovanni Testa lives with his wife Teresa and their two children in a village on the shores of Lake Garda. He has a shipyard where he builds boats, but he goes through economic problems, so he goes to his brother Enzo, who is rich, to ask for a loan. Enzo is murdered and Giovanni is accused since Enzo had denied him the loan. Giovanni flees to the mountains and adopts a false identity.

Two customs officers are shot dead by a smuggler gang. The Italian police puts Mauri and Berti on the case, which quickly gain the confidence of Stefan, who is in contact with the smugglers. Stefan's niece Sandra falls in love with Berti and makes Beppo, another smuggler - whom she is promised - jealous. Stefan does not want to have anything to do with the smugglers, but he is forced to go again. Berti and Mauri are capturing the gang step by step. But Beppo can flee and warn Stefan. In the mountains it comes to the last fight.
