    Coasts of New Zealand

    Franklyn Barrett (1910)

Colour tinted, this early film shows how tourists traveled around New Zealand in the early years of the twentieth century - by boat, horse, and trap, and on foot through bush walks and onto a glacier. The final third of the film shows a tour on Franz Josef Glacier by a group of men, women, and children. The film was filmed by Australian Franklyn Barrett, who was sent to the island by the Pathé Brothers to make a travelogue film about New Zealand.

L'ascension du Mont Blanc - Pathe Baby

L'ascension du Mont Blanc - Pathe Baby

    (1920s)

The ascent of Mont Blanc in four Pathe Baby reels. The film is a short version of the 1907 'L'ascension du Mont Blanc'. It shows the ascent of Mont Blanc from Chamonix by a party of guides and clients. The team assembles in front of the statue of De Saussure and Balmat in Chamonix. The mountaineers climb by a succession of snowfields, almost perpendicular glaciers, crossing the crevasses using a ladder. From Grands Mulets, the ascent continues by the glacier, and finally, after two days of travel since they left Chamonix, the team reaches the Vallot Observatory and later the Jansen Observatory, half buried in snow, on the summit of Mont Blanc.

A la conquête des cimes - Pathe Baby

    René Moreau (1927)

A short version of the film 'A la conquête des cimes' by René Moreau released for the domestic market in two Pathe Baby big reels. In the film, the mountain guide Hermann Perren prepares the ascent of Dent du Requin with a companion. He checks the equipment necessary for any mountaineer, rope, ice axe, glasses, double socks and iron shoes. They leave Chamonix, cross the Mer de Glace and arrive at the Requin Refuge. The next morning, Perren and his companion cross the glacier and encounter huge crevasses and seracs, which slow their progress. They cautiously cross a snow bridge and bivouac a few hours later. The climb is more and more difficult. They reach the Requin shoulder and have to climb the vertical wall to the summit.
