Nanga Parbat
(1970)
Official documentary of the 1970 German Expedition to the Nanga Parbat by the highest steep wall of the earth, the Rupal Face, which is 4500 meters high. During the expedition, led by Karl Maria Herrligkoffer, Günther Messner died while descending from the summit through the Diamir Face after having reached the top by the Rupal Face with his brother Reinhold. Reinhold lost seven toes and several fingertips to frostbite during the descent. The controversy about what really happened in the descent has caused disputes and lawsuits for years. The film Nanga Parbat (Joseph Vilsmaier, 2010) shows a dramatized version of the story according to the Messner's version. The camera of the 1970 expedition was the outstanding mountain filmmaker Gerhard Baur.
