Remnants of Everest - The 1996 tragedy

Remnants of Everest - The 1996 tragedy

    David Breashears (2007)

As darkness fell on May 10, 1996, a fast moving storm of unimaginable ferocity trapped three climbing teams high on the slopes of Mount Everest. The climbers, exhausted from their summit climb, were soon lost in darkness, in a fierce blizzard, far from the safety of High Camp at 26,000 feet. This film tells the story of the five climbers who perished in that storm, marking the worst climbing tragedy in Mount Everest's history. But more remarkably, it is the story of eleven climbers caught in the storm and the eyewitness accounts of their astonishing survival in the world's most unforgiving environment.

    Disaster on Everest

    Gabriella Polletta (2004)

In May 1996 Everest claimed the lives of 11 climbers. Some of these men and women were amateurs. They believed that any reasonably fit person could make it to the top of the world. They were adrenaline junkies but had to face tragic consequences when the forces of nature hit back. In May 1996, three groups departed Camp Four simultaneously, en route to the 29,028-foot summit. Over the next 48 hours, they faced hurricane-force winds, exposure, oxygen deprivation, freezing conditions, psychological pain and, ultimately, death. The film includes archive footage and testimony from expert mountaineers like Chris Bonington and Ed Viesturs, and from some of the disaster's survivors.
