    Footless Mountain Climber - Hugh Herr

    This Real People reportage filmed by Bob Carmichael, portrays a young Hugh Herr, only eighteen months after being rescued on Mount Washington, where after being caught in a blizzard and having passed three nights under extreme cold, suffered severe frostbite and lost his legs below the knees. With the help of leg prostheses, Herr is now back on the rock and climbs an easy route on Chickies Rock with the show host, Sarah Purcell, and a more difficult route on Shawangunk Ridge. Real People was a television series in which different hosts in front of a large studio audience were presenting reportages of varied 'real people' (as opposed to celebrities) with unique occupations or hobbies.

    In 1978, Steve Shea atarred in one of the first extreme ski films, Bob Carmichael's Fall Line, during which he made the second ski descent of the Grand Teton. One memorable cut, used for years on the pre-show lead for the TV program The american sportsman, showed Shea cart-wheeling down the length of the rock-strewn Kochs Couloir on Middle Teton.

    Roger Briggs and Duncan Ferguson free climb the Naked Edge, in Eldorado Canyon. This is Bob Carmichael's first climbing film, shot in 1972. Bob fell in with the climbing community and given his background in photography and summer internships at KGO-TV in San Francisco, he created one of the first films to be televised on climbing. He hitchhiked to NYC to sell the film and CBS Sports immediately purchased it. The film is considered the godfather of adventure filmmaking in the USA. Tommy Bolin, soon to be the lead guitarist for the James Gang and Deep Purple scored the film, and Len Aitken was the cinematographer and editor.
