Pierre Mazeaud, la vie en face(s) DVD

Pierre Mazeaud, la vie en face(s)

    Gilles Chappaz (2013)

Pierre Mazeaud has managed to unite three of his passions which seem to have nothing in common, at a very high level: mountaineering, jurisprudence and policy. The Everest mountaineer, rescued from the Freney Pillar, the passionate jurist, the former sports minister, privy counsellor, and president of the French Constitutional Court is a charismatic personality. This sensitive film portrait follows a line, which Pierre Mazeaud himself has quoted: “Alpinism belongs to those who provide themselves with means to reach their goals, to those who are fully committed to a goal, to those, who know the value of solidarity of men, and to those who are aware that true human existence can only be fulfilled by proceeding with a team of roped-partners.”

    The games climbers play...

    The games climbers play...

    Richard Else (1992)

Fifht episode of 'The climbers', a six-part series on the history of mountaineering by Chris Bonington and Richard Else produced by the BBC. This episode contrasts the traditions of climbers in Britain and on the continent of Europe, the former developing a technique of free climbing and the latter employing aids such as spanners, bolts and drills to climb routes that would otherwise be inaccessible. The program includes old footage of the 1946 film by Alain Pol 'L'appel des cimes' and of a young Joe Brown climbing in Snowdonia in 1957 in a program of the BBC 'Eye to eye' series.

    Eine europäische Seilschaft

    Eine europäische Seilschaft

    Lothar Brandler (1964)

Three famous climbers, the Frenchman Pierre Mazeaud, the German Winfried Ender and the Italian Roberto Sorgato, meet up at the bottom of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and decide to join together in a single roped party, climbing the 'Direttissima' on the north face of the Cima Grande di Lavaredo. The beautiful film illustrates with precise sequences the climb of the route, that was opened in 1958 by the filmmaker himself, Lother Brandler. The film wants to highlight the idea of frienship, cooperation, fraternity and peace showing three men from historically-confronted nationalities roped and working together as a single team. The film won the Grand Prix at the Trento Film Festival in 1964.

    Abîmes

    Gilbert Dassonville (1972)

Roberto Sorgato and Ignazio Piussi relive their adventure while climbing the north face of the Cima Ovest di Lavaredo, in the Dolomites, in 1961. Roberto Sorgato had an accidental 60 meters fall when they were preparing his third bivouac, and found himself hanging in the void at the end of the rope. By dint of perseverance, ingenuity and courage, the man succeeds in hoisting himself up to his companion. The movie, filmed eleven years later, is a re-enactement with the protagonists of the story acting in its own role.
