Luis Trenker - Pionier und Egomane

Luis Trenker - Pionier und Egomane

    Karin Duregger (2016)

Even more than 25 years after his death, Luis Trenker is still an icon of the mountains: no one else has ensured such a lasting popularisation of the living environment in the (South) Tyrolean Alps. Whether as a film pioneer or as a TV presenter, he captivated an audience of millions. A gnarly nature boy in a felt hat and a mountaineer's shirt: Luis Trenker, who died in 1990, is still remembered today. In the 1920s and 1930s, the actor, screenwriter and director shaped the young genre of 'mountain film'. His films attracted the masses to the cinema - and at the same time fascinated the dictators of the time, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

Die Berge, die Menschen, der Wahn Vod

Die Berge, die Menschen, der Wahn

    Stefan König (1998)

Questions are kept in mind: what impelled and drove the people into these extreme landscapes, onto such dangerous heights? What do they get from the mountains and what do they do to the mountains? These questions are the basis for this two hour documentary. This is the first film which takes a unique and comprehensive approach to this extensive subject. There is no commentary necessary, as the protagonists giving their account of the cultural history are experts in their field and quite charismatic personalities. This documentary film is not only conveyed through the lavish pictures or alpinistic enthusiasm, but through the individuals narrating each chapter.

    Auf schmalem Grat

    Auf schmalem Grat

    Steffi Illinger (2009)

This portrait of Luis Trenker depicts the ups and downs of a long journey through life, the difficult balance between Hitler and Mussolini, between adaptation and resistance, between contemporary tastes and cinematic art. Trenker's career is a piece of film history and at the same time reflects the history of South Tyrol in the 20th century. As a mountain fanatic and outdoorsman, as a charming chat-maker and crowd favorite, he will be unforgettable: Luis Trenker. Little is known that he was one of the pioneers of mountain films and that his life was closely interwoven with the political ups and downs in his home region of South Tyrol.
