Joe Simpson, whose battle for survival featured in 'Touching the Void', travels to the Eiger to tell the story of one of mountaineering's most epic tragedies. Toni Kurz was a brilliant mountaineer who in 1936 tried to be the first to conquer the north face of the Eiger. The climb started well, but disaster struck and Kurz's climbing colleagues were killed, leaving him alone and fighting for his life. The Beckoning Silence recounts Kurz's heroic battle for survival but it also forces Simpson to confront some fundamental questions of his own. Why continue climbing when you have come so close to oblivion?Climbing locations

Welsh mountaineer Eric Jones' ultimate dream is to climb the notorious North Face of the Eiger alone. Filming Eric Jones on his solo climb was a great challenge to cameraman Leo Dickinson, who had to be lowered from a helicopter to Death Bivouac, high on the mountain to capture Eric's progress on film. Leo Dickinson's film showed the scale of the achievement by seeing Eric Jones in his tiny perspective, a mere speck, against the magnitude of the mountain. The film also traces the history of the North Face including the early pre-war attempts that gave the mountain its notorious reputation. The climax of the film recreates John Harlin's 5000ft fall during the historic winter ascent of the Eiger Direct in 1966.Climbing locations

In 1936, in the Alps, only the Eiger North Wall still had to be climbed. Standing 1800 metres high, it was certainly the highest but also the most dangerous and difficult of the big inviolate walls. In 1935, two Bavarian alpinists from Munich lost their lives trying to reach the top. In 1936, two German soldiers, Toni Kurz and Andreas Interstoisser, made an attempt despite their commander's order not to do so. The attempt turned into a tragedy in which, not only the two Germans lost their lives, but also two Austrian companions who had joined them by chance.Climbing locations

Germany, summer 1936: Toni and Andi, friends since childhood, are particularly attracted to one mountain: the Eiger. Its north face, also known as 'the death face', has not yet been conquered. During their preparations, they encounter Luise, the first woman Toni ever loved. Now a journalist, she has arrived to cover their attempt, along with the loyal Nazi reporter Arau. On the face the two men meet the Austrians Willi and Edi. Then things spin out of control for the climbers: the weather changes, and Willy is injured. A race against time and the forces of nature is set in motion. Recreation of the drama of Toni Kurz and Andreas Hinterstoisser on the Eiger in 1936.Climbing locations
