Anatomia di una Scalata
Giancarlo Bregani (1967)
This film is dedicated to Angelo Vanelli, Giancarlo Bregani's great friend and climbing partner, and to another mountaineer, Sergio Ferrario di Legnano. The film, which sees as actors/players two mountaineers friends of Giancarlo, analyzes in every part the gestures and meanings of climbing, the relationship with the mountains, hence the title 'Anatomy of a climb'. There are therefore all the moments: the choice of the mountain, the route, the study of the line, the approach, the climb, the flight (simulated), the bivouac on the wall, the summit, the descent, the indissoluble relationship with the climbing partner, the only and personal relationship with the mountain, the very gesture of climbing.- 1967

La Pertze
Giorgio Squarzino (1991)
A historical reconstruction of the first ascent of Père Eternel, a monolith in the Mont Blanc range, judged by the famous guides in those days as inaccessible. August 7, 1927: Four porters from Courmayeur complete the first ascent of the Pére Eternel, a granite obelisk, at 3,224 m asl, between the glaciers of Entréves and Brenva, in the Mont Blanc massif. An undertaking considered impossible by the greatest guides of Courmayeur, carried out instead by Artur and Oswald Ottoz, Albin Pennard and Laurent Grivel, young bearers who have devised a 'trick' to overcome the key passage of the climb. Without knowing it, they inaugurated a new climbing technique: artificial climbing. The historical reconstruction of the climb was made by 4 guides from Courmayeur on the basis of the testimonies of Edouard Pennard, son of Albin, and Franis Thomasset, the first to repeat the route in 1932.- 1991

A great effort
Jim Curran (1975)
Jim Curran's first film tackles the nature of failure and the nature of effort. This short film is an artistic gem, and led just a few years later to the making of The Bat. It recreates Menlove Edwards famous article of the same name on a solo attempt of Central Gulley Direct on Lliwedd in Snowdonia in Wales. Jim Curran plays the part of Menlove Edwards as he attempts the route with possible fatal consequences. Why make any effort, or why accept any comfort - sometimes a great effort need not be measured in terms of success? The film is both whimsical and philosophical, as was the final sentence in the Times obituary for Menlove Edwards: 'he never married.'- 1975
