Die kalte Wut des Makalu
Dorit Kiesewetter (2004)
During an expedition to the peak of Makalu in the Himalayan mountains, the extreme mountaineer Knock Russell and his Sherpa Tashi Ram fight for survival. Only Ram manages the descent of the mountain. Years later, a further expedition sets out to find Russells body and reconstruct the unbelievable events. The film uses the forms of documentary filmmaking to create a take on the crisis of masculinity as caused by a mountain that is both powerful and camp at the same time. It skillfully disects the megalomania it presents while casting a self-reflexive glance at its own modes of presentation.Dorit Kiesewetter, Carsten Knoop

Der Kampf ums Matterhorn
Nunzio Malasomma (1934)
Sounded version of the 1928 film 'Der Kampf ums Matterhorn'. The added sound track included music composed by Schmidt-Boelckeb and dubbed dialogs by different actors. This version is slightly shorter than the silent film due to the disappearance of the movie titles. The story, based on the novel by Carl Haensel recreates the struggle between Edward Whymper and Jean-Antoine Carrel for the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. In 1938 two new versions of the movie were filmed under the direction of Luis Trenker, who acted again in the role of Carrel. One version was shot in German (Der Berg ruft) and the other in English (The Challenge).Nunzio Malasomma, Mario Bonnard
