    L'Aiguille Rouge

    L'Aiguille Rouge

    Emil-Edwin Reinert (1951)

Set in the French Alps, the film stars Michel Auclair and Michelle Philippe as Florian and Myra, young lovers fascinated with scaling the heights (in every sense of the phrase!) Their ardor reaches a fever pitch at a mountain resort, but tragedy looms on the horizon. Director E. E. Reinert stages many of the climbing sequences in the studio, using alpine mockups in the background. There is another version of the film titled Verträumte Tage, shot the same year in German and directed by the same director with a different cast.

    Zum dritten pol DVD

    Zum dritten pol

    Jürgen Czwienk (2008)

Norman Dyhrenfurth, 90, tells for the first time the extraordinary story of his parents, husband and wife mountaineers and filmmakers Hettie and Günter Dyhrenfurth, and their 1930s expeditions to the Himalayas (Kanchenjunga, Hidden Peak). These family expeditions equalled those of their state-sponsored Nazi rivals and beat them in setting world climbing records. In doing so, the Dyhrenfurths took the first moving pictures at high altitude. Norman himself put the first Americans on top of Mount Everest in 1963 and led the first traverse of an 8000-metre peak. Through engaging interviews, Chris Bonington and Reinhold Messner put the Dyhrenfurth expeditions into contemporary context and convey an intense compassion for the heroic achievements and tragic failures of this family.

    Blekitny krzyz DVD

    Blekitny krzyz

    Andrzej Munk (1955)

A documentary re-enactment of an event in February 1945, when men from a Mountain Rescue Team -the Blue Cross of the title was their badge- in the Tatra Mountains in Poland, summoned by a Slovak doctor, crossed the mountains to rescue three badly wounded men, their nurse and a guard from an isolated hut near a German outpost. The characters were played by some of the original participants and amateur actors. It's a well-put together short film; the events almost entirely described by an omniscient commentator with a mixture of location and well-made re-enactment.
